Michael Welsh: A Vision of Students Today
I think this movie does capture a lot of my college experience. We have a lot going on and a lot more stuff to do and that we want to do than we have time for. Homework and jobs and class take up most of our days, but our social life is very important to us also. Sometimes homework and studying does not get done because we would rather be hanging out with our friends or for a lot of students it doesn’t get done because we have to work to pay the bills just so we can be in college. If we weren’t in college we wouldn’t be having to work so hard to pay our bills plus tuition and books, but our studies do not get as much attention as they should because we are having to use most of that time to work.
The only thing I would add to the video would be more of an emphasis on how much students work. A lot of students work full time and go to school full time. Working full time is 40 hours a week which is roughly 5.7 hours a day.
It’s not About the Technology by Kelly Hines
This post was very interesting. She has a very valid point to make. I think all current and future teachers should read this. It would help them to become better teachers. You do not have to know how to use every new technology to be a good teacher. Those are good ways to supplement the things you teach. But if you do not know how to do something, such as blog for instance, it does not make you a bad teacher. Teachers need to be aware of the new technology surrounding it and be interested in learning new things but they do not need to become experts on everything. I want to be a special education teacher. Most of the students I will have will never be able to do some of the advanced technologies available but technology will keep them alive. We as teachers need to learn about the new things that will benefit our students the most.
Dr. Fisch’s Blog Post
I think Dr. Fisch’s post was interesting. I did not realize how much people do brag about being teachnologically illiterate. In the United States every person has access to a computer whether in their home or in a public place such as a library. And most people in the United States do know how to use a computer but most do not know very much about them.
I do not think it is ok for a teacher to be computer illiterate. I do not think they need to know everything there is to know about a computer but I think they should know the basic operations. There are many new programs available to teachers to help them teach and I think they should be trained to use those if they wish to use them. Not every teacher is going to use mostly media to teach their class. Different teachers teach different ways and they need to be able to do what is most comfortable to them and what can help their students the most.

The numbers don’t surprise me. I know how much people use the internet and technology every day. It has become a part of everyone’s daily routines. For my teaching career it means there are so many new things available to help me teach the students and even more will be available by the time I graduate. Students in the future will have so many more opportunities I never could have imagined having.

C4T #1
The teacher posted in his blog about skyping with Professor Garibaldi from Emory University. He had contacted the teacher about skyping with his class so they could learn about how he uses math in rock climbing. The teacher asked the students to think of questions to ask the professor while skyping. He posted some of the student’s questions on his blog. And they were all very interesting questions. I commented on his blog telling him I thought it was a very fun and interesting way to teach math and show how it can be used everyday. I said I hope the children have fun with this activity and they will all learn something new and take something positive away from it.
In the Second post I commented on by Karl Fisch was very interesting. He had read an article in one of his local newspapers that said “Summer is almost over, and the disappointment of returning to class…” He was very frustrated by the comment. He said that most students, teachers, and faculty are excited about returning to school. He felt like it gave school a negative image. I agree that the comment could give schools a negative image, but I also felt like it would hurt other student’s excitement for school. Those that read the comment may think other student’s their age are not excited about school so in turn they will not act as excited.

Blog Post 2
Did you know 3.0
The video was very interesting. There was a lot of information and facts on there that I did not know. I did not realize that the population of India was that much larger than the United States and Japan, and it is very interesting that they have more honors student’s than the United States has in total number of students. Soon India will have a very big population problem. It would be interesting to know how they planned to control the population growth.
I also did not realize how fast technology has spread. It took 38 years for the radio to be in 50 million households but only three years for the ipod to reach 50 million users. It shows how much technology has changed and how it is more readily accessible and available than technology was 50 or more years ago.

This video was very interesting. If someone did wake up after 100 years of sleeping they would find themselves in a very strange world. They would be shocked and not know what to do. The world is a completely different place than it was 100 years ago. There were no computers or cars. The technology we have now makes things so much easier than it was years ago. It also saves lives every day.
In the video Mr. Winkles thinks that school has not changed and it is the same as when he attended school, but I do not agree with this. I think that schools have changed a lot in the last 100 years. They have kept up with the technological advances. Most classrooms have computers in them for the students to use.
Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity
I do not think schools destroy creativity. Although, sometimes it does limit creativity. There is still a time for children to be creative. They do have structured assignments that tell them what they have to do. In some assignments there is no room for creativity.
But there are also activities and assignments teachers can do to let children use their imagination. Art is a good class for children to use their creative skills. Even though they may be told what to draw or what type of materials to use, they are still able to make it look any way they want. They can use different colors or use their imagination of what they think something should look like.

She makes a very important point when she says students do not all learn well using paper and pencil. Every student learns differently. Some do well using computers and I think it is a great idea that she uses so many different types of technology to teach her students. It is also interesting how she has her students teach her class.
She also said she does not know everything. No teacher will know how to do everything and we constantly have to expand our knowledge. She explained how her students taught her something new in class that she did not know how to do. Blog Post #1
My name is Ashley Hammond. I have attended the University of South Alabama for tow years. Before going to school here I went to Calhoun Community College in Decatur, AL. I am originally from Decatur and until moving to Mobile had lived there my whole life. My major is elementary and special education. Originally my major was occupational therapy but I changed my major because I really want to work with children with special needs.
I want to work with children with special needs because I have a younger brother who has a disability. I have seen how his teachers over the years have helped him so much. He would not be able to do half the things he is able to do today without their help. They are amazing and go out of their way to see their students succeed and I want to be able to do that for children like him. It is a blessing to work with them and I am excited to one day make a difference in their lives.
